Abstract

Compendio

Abstract

Recently, the importance of considering Hispanic cultural values while working with breast cancer patients has been established. This includes involving the patient’s family in the treatment. This article’s objectives are: 1) to explore the family’s reaction regarding the diagnosis of the patient, 2) to explore the impact of the patient´s family support, and 3) the importance of the family members’ involvement in the treatment. This study confirms the importance of delivering health services, not only to the patient, but also to her family system. It is important to help them explore their feelings and fears about the cancer, encourage communication, assess the impact of the illness on the structural level and encourage the re-organization of the system after the diagnosis.
