Abstract

En este escrito los autores hacen una revisión de datos relevantes a las características socio-demográficas de las personas ateas y a los supuestos psicológicos que han sido esbozados por diversos psicólogos/as sobre esta población. Los autores documentan las formas en que históricamente las personas ateas han sido encuadradas dentro de la psicología clínica, como neuróticas e inestables. Sin embargo, la evidencia de estudios publicados en las últimas décadas no apoya tales caracterizaciones.  Al contrario, muchas personas ateas no sólo no presentan psicopatología, sino que muestran flexibilidad cognitiva al momento de pasar juicio social sobre otros grupos minoritarios. Se demuestra también que a nivel macro-social, las sociedades en el mundo que son más seculares poseen mejores parámetros de salud social. Los autores proponen que los practicantes de la psicología deben de conocer más a fondo las particularidades e idiosincrasias de las personas ateas para ofrecerles un servicio psicológico libre de estereotipos y prejuicios.
